eVisa Transition for International Students in the UK

Introduction of eVisas for students

From 1 January 2025 the UK will fully transition to a digital immigration system. This means that all physical immigration documents will be replaced with an online record of your immigration status. This is known as an eVisa. The change will apply to biometric residence permits (BRP), biometric residence cards (BRC) and vignette stickers in passports, such as entry clearance or visa vignettes.

eVisa will be linked to a current passport. If you replace your passport you need to update your online immigration record so that your immigration status can be easily identified at the UK border.

Switching to eVisa

All students with a BRP card expiring by 31 December 2024 are required to create an online account with UKVI to access their eVisa and share this with their school or university. The link to create a UKVI account is here. If your BRP card has been lost or stolen you can use your passport and your visa application reference number to create your UKVI account.

Cost of eVisa

For all students with a valid BRP there is no cost to register for the UKVI account and obtain an eVisa.

Students should still carry their existing BRP when travelling until its expiry, even if they have access to their eVisa

If students do not create an account before 31 December 2024, they will still be able to use the expired BRP to register for the UKVI account. Students will however not be able to use the expired BRP to travel internationally.
