Cost of Studying in the UK University in 2026

What International Families Should Budget For

When choosing a UK university, families often begin by looking at the tuition fee. This is important but it is only one part of the real cost of studying in the UK.

A realistic budget should also include accommodation, food, bills, flights, visa fees, the Immigration Health Surcharge, study materials and the student’s everyday living expenses. For international families, understanding the full picture early can make university choices much clearer and more manageable.

Course Fees in the UK

For 2026 planning, international undergraduate tuition fees are from £11,400 to £38,000 and international postgraduate tuition fees from £9,000 to £30,000. Humanities and social sciences usually sit at the lower end, while laboratory based, engineering and medical programmes are generally more expensive.

Living Costs and Location

Accommodation is usually the next major expense. From our experience, international students without dependants would have to budget around £1,300 to £1,400 per month in London and £900 to £1,300 per month outside London for accommodation, bills, groceries and other regular living costs.

This is why location matters. A university outside London may offer the right academic programme with a lower overall cost of living. For some families, the difference over three years can be significant. The right decision is not always the most famous city but the place where the student can study well, live comfortably and manage the experience with confidence.

Families also need to plan for the Student visa and healthcare costs. The current Student visa application fee is £558. The Immigration Health Surcharge for students is currently £776 per year and it is calculated according to the length of study visa.

For a Student visa, families must also show that they have enough money to pay for the course and support the student in the UK. The current living cost requirement is £1,529 per month in London and £1,171 per month outside London, for up to nine months. The money may need to be held for 28 days in a row and the evidence must usually be recent.

Planning the Budget Strategically

The purpose of budgeting is not simply to reduce costs. It is to make the decision clearer.

When families understand the full cost of study, they can plan with less uncertainty and choose universities in a more informed way. A strong university choice should feel academically appropriate, financially realistic and personally right for the student.

For international families, this kind of planning is an important part of a wider education strategy. It helps turn a complex decision into a considered next step.

Plan the full cost before choosing.
