One Family, Four Different Needs

When a family we work with moved from the United States to London, they needed schools for four children aged six to sixteen. Each child had different academic goals, interests and ideas about where they would feel comfortable. This was not a search for one school that could accommodate everyone. It was about understanding four individuals and finding the right school options for each of them.

Keeping US Universities in View

For one child, preparation for US university applications was a key consideration. We looked beyond academic results to understand how schools supported subject choices, application preparation and the admissions process as a whole. What mattered was consistent experience of guiding a substantial group of pupils through American university applications every year, rather than a few individual success stories.

A Place to Feel Known

For another child, a sense of belonging mattered most. We looked for schools where teachers knew their pupils well, relationships were built on trust and helping new arrivals settle was a clear strength. We wanted the child to feel that, if something was difficult, there would always be an adult who would notice, take time to listen and help. The atmosphere and everyday relationships within the school were central to this search.

Sport and a British Prep School Experience

For the third child, sport needed to be an important part of school life, with a meaningful place in both the timetable and the school’s culture. For the youngest, the parents wanted a traditional British prep school experience, combining a strong academic foundation with a wide range of activities and a clear daily routine. These were two distinct priorities, each requiring a different approach to the shortlist.

Room for Genuine Choice

For each child, we found several strong options in London. This allowed the family to compare schools on the things that mattered to them, without expecting all four children to fit the same model. The practicalities of family life still mattered but they did not have to come at the expense of individual needs. The family could make choices that worked for each child as well as for their life in London.

Understanding the Differences Between Schools

This experience reflects one of the strengths of London’s private schools. The choice is not simply about how many schools there are but how much they differ in character, priorities and approach. A school that suits one child particularly well may not be the right environment for a sibling. Our role was not to name one “best” school but to understand what mattered to each child and help the family make four considered choices.
