Educational Guardians for International Students in the UK

Educational guardianship

Educational guardianship is a legal arrangement that is put in place to ensure the welfare of international students who are studying in the UK. The purpose of an educational guardian is to act as a point of contact for the student's school or college, and to take responsibility for the student's wellbeing while they are in the UK.

The educational guardian will typically be responsible for:

  • Making sure the student has a safe and secure place to live
  • Acting as a point of contact for the student's school or college
  • Monitoring the student's academic progress and welfare
  • Organising transfers to/from the airport
  • Dealing with any emergencies or problems that may arise

Under UK law, all international students under the age of 18 are required to have an educational guardian if they are studying in the UK without a parent or close relative who lives in the country.

Who can be an educational guardian?
An educational guardian must:
  • Be over the age of 25
  • Not be a sibling of the student
  • Be a permanent resident in the UK
  • Live within a reasonable distance from school

New rules for appointing an educational guardian

It is essential to appoint a reputable educational guardian who has experience in caring for international students and understands their unique needs. The educational guardian should also have the necessary legal and regulatory clearance to work in this capacity and they should have a comprehensive understanding of the duties and responsibilities associated with the role. Since this year The Department of Education made it compulsory for schools to check the accreditation of appointed guardians and now schools have the right to reject guardians whom they consider to be not suitable for the role.

Cost of educational guardianship - from £750 per term
